If I were finishing residency today, I wouldn’t start with a complicated investing strategy. I’d start with a few boring moves that create margin and protection.

The attending paycheck creates options. It also creates temptation. I’d keep the first moves simple:

  • Cash
  • Protection
  • High-interest debt
  • Retirement accounts
  • Slow lifestyle upgrades

The early attending years are a rare chance to build momentum before lifestyle catches up.

I’d probably add one more: don’t make your first attending paycheck your baseline lifestyle.
